2010 Location: Victoria Hill, New Westminster,BC, Canada Onni Corporation / facilitated by David Stoyko BCSLA  This wind powered mobile was installed in 2010 to celebrate the development of Victoria Hill, previous site of BC's oldest mental institution, Woodlands. It is my hope that the carefree movements of this sculpture will somehow free the tortured souls of former inmates for more visit our website. Addressing the global challenge of sustainability his current sculptures are "generating capital ” by selling excess electrical power back to BC Hydro. These energy systems also feature listening stations which help remind...

Nautilus

2014 The overlaying of three skeletal Nautilus speaks to the transition from the micro biology of a simple ocean organism to the macrocosm of the Milky Way.  For excellent graphics : https://vimeo.com/9953368 Editions of 14" and 42" Stainless and Bronze Nautilus are available through :Robinson Studio Gallery Open and  melissa morgan fine art palm desert ca  This design falls into the realm of the golden spiral. Le Corbusier's faith in the mathematical order of the universe was closely bounced to the golden ratio, which he described as "rhythms apparent to the eye and clear in their relations...

Performing Arts Lodge Vancouver

2014 Located in PAL’S Roof Top Garden. A Memorial for Jack Thorne by Joy Coghill. Landscape by Jane Durante. This Leaf Weathervane is ultra sensitive to wind direction. Stainless Steel, 3 ft. x 9 ft. As metaphor for our environment, I chose to represent the vascular anatomy of the leaf for it’s potency as a renewable energy system of incredible efficiency. Clearly the ability to photosynthesize water, sunlight and CO2 into stored carbon energy while expiring oxygen to balance the biosphere is a process that enables our survival. The leaf is a biological converter of incredible capacity....

Pioneer Spirit

2010 I have recently installed Pioneer Spirit as Coquitlam’s Centennial interpretive sculpture for the French enclave Maillardville. This sculpture is the first I have made which will pay for itself over time. Four large sails and an array of solar panels will generate power which will be sold back to BC Hydro. At night Led lighting continually changes palette  on the sail sufaces. This kinetic work also features  three listening stations. Live audio feed from an articulated parabolic microphone allows the listener to focus on the immediate surroundings, with the option of...

Bird Song Listening Station

2008 Location: Seattle Center This interactive listening station is powered by the wind and sun. Participants standing under the sound dome will hear high fidelity bird song from the Western Finches frequenting the site. "In the 21st century, we lead extraordinarily busy lives in densely populated areas with high levels of traffic noise," says Taylor. "We tend to not hear the wind in the trees or the bird song coming from our feathered friends high up in the branches. Bird Song Listening Station helps remind us of sounds which are ever present in the...

Khenko

2006 Khenko celebrates the return of the heron to the waters of False Creek after many years of industrial pollution. This artwork takes it's origin form the genre of early Canadiana folk objects depicting flying birds. 200 years ago these were often crafted at home and erected in the back yard. In high force winds the sails govern themselves by planing and doing 360's. Location: George Waynborn Park, False Creek, Vancouver, BC Dedication: Dr. David Lam, Former Lt. Governor of British Columbia...

Purple Martin

2002 Sculpture Concept: “The swallow  represents the flight path of the bird as it feeds in the evening light. The inspiration came from the 'nesting box' program initiated by the Ministry of the Environment located adjacent to the site. Being a kinetic wind activated sculpture this piece also contains a metaphor of continual change. So building this piece has been a risky process… just about as risky as the flight of the insect which is about to become swallow's dinner.” "It's a continuously moving wind activated coiled spring… clearly the metaphor embraces the risks...

Whistler Whiskey Jack

Ford Groove

2000 This truck once worked the blueberry fields that are now all blacktopped. As the trembling Aspen grow larger the ‘52 Ford  will rise higher. Nature and technology are truly engaged in this piece. Ford Grove  addresses the historic  erosion of  farmland over the past decades: ubiquitous fields of blueberries have been replaced with strip malls, condo developments and warehousing . . . an ongoing eradication of some of the world’s richest farmland. This Ford pickup was at one time working in those blueberry fields! This metaphor of the machine  being invaded by...
